Education with Inspiration … has a new home!

It is with delight and a great sigh of relief that a group of “estrangeiro” parents and teachers in the Western Algarve have finally succeeded in opening a permanent base for their pioneering secondary school for 10-16 year olds.

The «Aljezur International School» will open its doors for the coming school year in September. It has the enthusiastic backing of the “Câmara Municipal de Aljezur” and DREALG (the regional education authority), as well as a licence from the Ministry of Education.

Already 40 pupils are enrolled, and thanks to the increased space now available, there are still places for more.

The ethos of the school – which will be the world’s first environmentally-intelligent “CoolSchool”, built to the CoolHouse System - remains exactly the way the group of tutors have always worked: small class sizes to enable each child to learn at their own pace – with individually tailored learning programmes, so that pupils can achieve their best, both academically and socially.

Over the 20 years that this educational team has been teaching in the Algarve, their students have achieved consistently excellent IGCSE exam results. But that’s not all. Mindful of economic realities, the philosophy has always been to make first-class education available at a realistic price.

On offer from September will be 12 compulsory subjects, taught by a staff of nine, with various optional extra-curricular subjects.

Although most of the teaching is in English, all students take part in Portuguese language lessons every day, as well as studying Portuguese culture and arts. Classes will begin at 9.25am and end at 3.30pm from Monday to Friday, and there will be a bus service available from several pick-up points near Lagos, including Barlavento Primary School (Espiche).

It’s the happy conclusion to years of seeking a permanent base for a school that truly offers education with inspiration – and has never wavered in its commitment to pupils and parents.

“We’re all incredibly excited!” English teacher Karen Whitten tells. “This is a fabulous project, and we can’t wait to get started!”
